BYLAW 2024-07: KEEPING OF BACKYARD HENS

Section 1. Purpose. This bylaw regulates the keeping of domestic hens on residential properties within the municipality.

Section 2. Permitted numbers. A resident may keep up to six (6) hens on a residential lot with a valid coop permit issued by the municipal office. Roosters are prohibited in all residential zones due to noise considerations.

Section 3. Coop requirements. Coops must be located in the rear yard, at least 3 metres from any property line and 15 metres from any neighbouring dwelling. Coops must provide a minimum of 0.4 square metres per hen and be kept in a clean, sanitary condition free of vermin.

Section 4. Permits. Coop permits cost $25 annually and are renewed each April. Applications are available at the municipal office or on the website. Inspections may be conducted with 48 hours notice.

Section 5. Enforcement. Failure to comply may result in fines of $100 for a first offence and $250 for subsequent offences, and revocation of the coop permit.
