OPEN AIR BURNING AND FIRE PIT REGULATIONS

Backyard fire pits are permitted on residential properties subject to the following conditions. The fire pit must be a commercially manufactured appliance or a pit enclosed by non-combustible material such as brick, stone or metal, no larger than 75 centimetres in diameter.

Fire pits must be located at least 5 metres from any building, fence, tree or other combustible material. Only clean, dry firewood may be burned. Burning of garbage, leaves, construction materials, or treated wood is strictly prohibited.

Fires must be attended by an adult at all times, and a means of extinguishment such as a garden hose or bucket of water must be within reach. All fires must be fully extinguished before being left.

Burning is prohibited entirely during fire bans declared by the provincial fire marshal or the municipal fire chief. Check the municipal website or call the fire hall for current fire ban status. Violations may result in fines up to $1,000 and liability for firefighting costs.
